The Old Greek word τέκνον (teknon) means "child". Just like words for child in German (Kind) and in the Scandinavian languages (barn), it is a neutral, being neither male nor female. One shouldn't read too much into this though. Studies have shown that a large majority of children in Germany and parts of Scandinavia are either male or female. There is no reason to believe that it was much different in Greece.
